The basic function of Beat Blocks is to provide students a concrete manipulative to aid in the introduction and comprehension of abstract musical elements. Musical concepts such as beat versus rhythm, note subdivisions, melody, harmony, and dynamics layer as physical building blocks to create a musical work. Students can use Beat Blocks to dictate, compose, and physically explore the characteristics of different musical elements. Teachers can use the students’ work to assess each child’s musical understanding in a tactile and direct fashion rather than through one dimensional mediums such as paper and pencil. In addition, students with low fine motor skills can still express musical understanding without being hindered by any shortcomings.
